Gemeinde Diex

Diex is a municipality in the district of Völkermarkt in Carinthia. The municipality is located in southeastern Carinthia on the southern slope of the Saualpe high above the Jauntal and Lavanttal valleys.

Fortified church around Diex cemetery and parish church

Around the cemetery and the church building, the visitor marvels at a remarkable early modern circular wall, about 5 m high, over an irregular hexagonal ground plan, as well as three-quarter round towers at the bends in the east and west. In the northeast corner there is a trapezoidal gateway with embrasures. A late Gothic crucifixion group (dating from around 1515) is emblazoned above the profiled portal, the gate building itself is barrel-vaulted, a stone depicting the "Oath Hand of Odin" is walled in above the portal exterior, inscribed on the cemetery side with 1535 (construction completion), and the door has shooting holes. On the inner side of the defensive wall there is a wooden covered walkway, well preserved, with a shield wall and a throwing gap, which can be covered by movable beams.
