Your Holiday starts in Austria
Gemeinde Hohenweiler
Hohenweiler is the northernmost municipality in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg. The municipality of Hohenweiler is located in the westernmost province of Austria, Vorarlberg, in the district of Bregenz north of Lake Constance.
When you come to Hohenweiler, you have not only reached the northernmost municipality of Vorarlberg, but also that part of the Leiblach valley where the Austrian and German sides border directly on each other.
Situated at an altitude of about 500 meters above sea level and surrounded by Sigmarszell (D), Möggers and Hörbranz, Hohenweiler has about 1300 inhabitants.
Hohenweiler is characterized by several streams running from the Pfänder ridge to the border river Leiblachtal, which - lined by forest and bushes - structure the village. In between lie the various parcels of land - lined up along highway 1.
Biking, walking and hiking trails offer pure local recreation - right on the doorstep.
Culture and sights
Catholic parish church Hohenweiler St. George
Abbey Mariastern Gwiggen: The monastery was built in 1895 by Laurentius Wocher, who served as abbot of Mehrerau from 1893 to 1895. In contrast to the churches in Frastanz or Silbertal, it shows a kind of pre-Alpine Gothic, which refers only to a basic Gothic structure and is without pathos.
Gmündmühle: The district of Gmünd is located directly at the mouth of the border stream Rickenbach to Bavaria into the Leiblach, which also follows the border line in the further course. Opposite on the Bavarian side is a medium-sized sawmill, a few meters away on this side on the Vorarlberg side is the picturesque inn with guesthouse "Gmündmühle". It is a half-timbered house, which was built around 1740 and then extended by further farm buildings also in half-timbered construction. The furnishings of the inn still correspond to the original equipment for the most part. A special rarity are two wall clocks built into wooden walls, the older of which (around 1760) is still functional.
