Sankt Johann im Pongau

St. Johann im Pongau (Pongau dialect: Seiger Håns, Sénnig Håns or Seini(g) Håns, short form: St. Johann/Pg.) is the capital and also the most populous municipality of the district of St. Johann im Pongau in the province of Salzburg.

Culture and sights

Catholic deanery parish church of St. Johann im Pongau St. John the Baptist: first documented mention of a church on this site in 924. The present church building is a reconstruction of 1855, after the great market fire: neo-Gothic with a tower, which, however, collapsed in 1871. The church was rebuilt in the same style, but with two towers.

Annakapelle: Located to the left of the "Dom", it is the only Gothic sacred building in St. Johann spared from the great city fire of 1855. The Anna Chapel is characterized by two peculiarities: First, it is a two-story church.

Friedenskirche Hochgründeck near the Heinrich Kiener House at Hochgründeck; modern wooden chapel

Mountain church Ginau in Ginau; neo-Gothic votive chapel

Memorial with monuments and graves of the victims of the Nazi-era prisoner-of-war camp Markt Pongau (STALAG) in Reinbach (accessible via B311) - Guided tours at the so-called 'Russenfriedhof' (Russian Cemetery) are offered by the association Geschichtswerkstatt usually on every first Sunday of the month. The information steles there are a commissioned work of the artist Karl Hartwig Kaltner.

Arthurstollen Mining Historic Monument: A prehistoric mine complex with extensive shaft systems for former copper mining; numerous wood, support and metal finds. Currently (as of 2015), visiting the adit is officially prohibited for safety reasons. It is possible to visit the surge chamber at the entrance (dating back to the time when it was used as a water conduit).

Liechtensteinklamm: a 4000 m long and 300 m deep gorge created by the "Großarler Ache"; natural monument.

The public book cell in the town center is also operated and maintained by the kultur:plattform.

Since the 1980s, private individuals and cultural associations (for example, the former Spektrum cultural association and its currently active successor kultur:plattform) have organized and continue to organize top-class author readings with free admission under the motto "free access to free words". The numerous guests so far have included, for example, H. C. Artmann and Friedrich Achleitner, Manfred Baumann, Alois Brandstetter, Thomas Glavinic, Jan Kossdorff, Kurt Palm, Teresa Präauer, Michael Stavari?, Cornelia Travnicek, Gerlinde Weinmüller and many more.

The Culture and Congress House serves as a large venue for events, such as cabaret evenings and concerts.
