The district of Mariahilf was created in 1850 by incorporating five former suburbs as the 5th district of Vienna, became the 6th district in 1861 due to the division of Wieden and has existed since 1862 after ceding territory to the northern neighboring district of Neubau. In its current size, the district exists since a border correction in 2009, when a small part of the Naschmarkt was ceded from the 4th district, so that the market is now entirely in the territory of the 6th district.
