Culture and sights

The pilgrimage church of Maria Elend is a Gothic hall church with considerable Baroque modifications and a massive Romanesque steeple. It was built by the Ossiach Benedictines after 1267.

The so-called Kapellenberg is located on the slope south of Maria Elend. There, halfway up the hill, two chapels stand next to each other:
The smaller one is older and was consecrated on October 24, 1731 by the Ossiach abbot Virgil. It has a wooden tower. The Latin inscription "Maria in Exilio" says that it is dedicated to Mary in misery, in exile.
The larger chapel, consecrated in 1751, was built by a wealthy woman from Graz: She made a vow to build a larger chapel over the existing one in the event of her recovery to Mary, the Mother of God. However, instead of replacing the old chapel, the builder simply placed the large one next to the first one, which led to the present arrangement of the two chapels.
Not far from the two chapels, to the east, is a spring with a wooden superstructure built in 1767. The water flows from the side of a stone statue of Jesus and, according to ancient folk belief, has healing properties. Many pilgrims come to this spring, called Vodica (little water), wet their eyes three times, praying.
