Kötschach-Mauthen is an Austrian market town in the district of Hermagor in Carinthia. The municipality is located 34 km west of Hermagor (Šmohor) at the transition of the Upper Gail Valley (Ziljska dolina) into the Lesach Valley. It is the starting point of the roads to the north over the Gailbergsattel, to the south over the Plöckenpass, to the west into the Lesachtal valley over Maria Luggau to Sillian and to the east over Hermagor to Arnoldstein.

Culture and sights

    The parish church of Kötschach is a late Gothic hall church and is also called Gailtaler Dom.

    The 1915-18 Museum in the town hall of the market town was opened in 1992. The exhibition documents the mountain war 1915-1918 on the front line not far from Körtschach-Mauthen.
