Gemeinde Ossiach

Ossiach (Slovenian: Osoje; "shadow side") is a municipality in the district of Feldkirchen in Carinthia. The municipality lies on the southern shore of Lake Ossiach between the Schattseite of the Ossiacher Tauern and the southern side of Lake Ossiach. The shady side extends eastward into the Bleistatt. Ossiach is located about halfway between Villach and the district capital Feldkirchen.

Culture and sights

Ossiach Abbey: Originally, the collegiate church was built around the year 1000 as a Romanesque pillar basilica.
In the 15th century, a defense tower and mighty outer walls were built to serve as protection against Turkish invasions. After the abolition of the monastery, the buildings threatened to crumble. It was not until 1965 to 1975 that the entire monastery complex, including the collegiate church, was restored.
Today, the monastery buildings serve as a performance venue for cultural events.

    Tauern Church

The tomb of the Polish King Boles?aw II.

Regular events

Ossiach Abbey is one of the venues of the Carinthian Summer. The Carinthian Summer was founded in 1969 in Ossiach by Jakob Stingl, a former parish priest, and Helmut Wobisch.

Every year in August, the International Arts and Crafts Market takes place in Ossiach. At this market, artisans from Austria and abroad present their works of art (clay, wood, glass art, painting, products made of fabric and wool).
