Marktgemeinde Rosegg

Rosegg is an Austrian market town located at the western end of the Rosental valley in the district of Villach-Land in Carinthia. The municipality is crossed by the Drava River, which is used for energy by the Rosegg-St. Jakob hydroelectric power plant.

Culture and sights

Rosegg Castle is a villa built from the year 1772 by Count Franz Xaver Wolfgang von Orsini-Rosenberg, strongly inspired by northern Italian models. Since 1833 the castle has been owned by the family of the House of Liechtenstein. In the park there is a maze of hornbeam hedges.
Only a few remains of the walls of the former Rosegg Castle, built in the 12th century, have been preserved.
The Rosegg Zoo was created around the castle hill by Peter Ritter von Bohr starting in 1830.
The Frög burial ground is a tumulus burial ground from the Hallstatt period that was discovered in 1882 and has since been largely excavated.
The pillar wayside shrine west of Frojach dates from the 18th century (1757). It was restored in 1930 and 1982 (marked "J. Stefan").

The Šikoronja Gallery hosts regular exhibitions of contemporary Austrian and Slovenian artists.
Slovenian Cultural Association/Slovensko kulturno društvo "Peter Markovi?", headed by Prof. DI Franc Kattnig as president.
The traditional group, founded in 1976, regularly organizes various events (Easter shooting, Solstice celebrations, Krampus, etc.) in the municipality.
