Gemeinde Berg im Drautal

Berg im Drautal is a municipality in the district of Spittal an der Drau in Carinthia. The municipality is located in the upper Drau valley between the Gailtal Alps with the Jauken (up to 2276 m) in the south and the north-sloping mountain slope of the Kreuzeckgruppe (up to 2784 m).

Culture and sights

The parish church Mariae Geburt, situated above Berg, is a late Romanesque building that was first mentioned in a document in 1267. In the second half of the 15th century it was converted into a fortified church, during which the original shape of the tower and the nave were also changed.
The Roman Catholic Filial Church of St. Athanasius (St. Athanas near Berg) is located south of the village, not far from the Drau Valley road, in a flat field. It was first mentioned in 1443 and was probably built on a very old sanctuary. Inside the church there are fragments of grave inscriptions from the Roman period. In 1485 it was consecrated to St. Nonosius by the bishop of Caorle. The veneration of Nonnosus in Upper Carinthia, it is documented for St. Peter in Holz near Lendorf and for Molzbichl, goes back to the Christianization from the Bavarian Freising. Even today Nonnosus is a secondary patron in the Freising cathedral. Later Nonnosus was replaced by St. Athanasen. The church used to be a popular pilgrimage church.

The non-profit association Stella Carinthia was founded when the Emberger Hochalm, located above the district of Emberg, proved to be an ideal astronomical observation site. The astro club built a public observatory there and organizes the annual International Telescope Meeting on the Emberger Alm in the fall.
