Gemeinde Arriach
Geographical center of Carinthia
The municipality of Arriach - the geographical center of Carinthia - is a rural community of about 1350 inhabitants with an area of 70.7 km². To the south Arriach is embedded by the Gerlitzen (1911 m) and to the north by the Wöllaner Nock (2145 m). Due to its low mountain range location and its position away from highways and through roads, Arriach has excellent air quality.
Agriculture in the community is characterized by cattle farming. In the last few years, farm vacations and direct marketing have become an important additional source of income.
For many years, the community of Arriach has based its entire offer on soft tourism. The majority of the tourist accommodations are farm vacations and private accommodations, which register about 21,000 tourist overnight stays per year. Arriach's tourist offer appeals to both summer vacationers and winter vacationers due to the development of the Gerlitzen winter skiing area.
Arriach was first mentioned in documents in 1207 as "Ovriach". Around the turn of the millennium the first settlers may have come to Arriach. Numerous farmhouses, old Blochstadl and Troadkästen indicate the rural history.
Also worth seeing are the three culturally and historically valuable Catholic churches in Arriach, Wöllan and Innerteuchen, as well as the largest Protestant church in Carinthia.
